Diagnosis
Varicose
vein disease can be very complex and
each patient presents with a unique set
of circumstances. Both diagnostic and
therapeutic expertise is key in being
able to correctly diagnose and treat the
problem.
The work up begins with a good history
and physical examination. Once the
diagnosis of varicose veins is
established, the next step is to obtain
a duplex ultrasound study. A good study
done by an experienced RVT (Registered
Vascular Technologist) will take 30-45
minutes for both legs. This study uses
a sonogram (noninvasive testing) to
visualize both deep and superficial
venous systems in great detail.
Interpretation of this study will allow
your physician to delineate the exact
location of the “leaky” vein that is
causing the back flow and the varicose
veins.
This precise testing is absolutely
necessary because it enables your doctor
to come up with a very specific
treatment plan that is tailored exactly
to your situation.
